Join the Club (House)!

A hotelier recently invited Kim to join the social networking app, Clubhouse. It was the first we’d heard of this new platform, so we did a little digging to figure out what it’s all about. BizBash published an informative article, What Is Clubhouse, and How Should Event Pros Be Using It? that answered most of our questions. Much of its iPhone-only Beta community of 600,000 users is comprised of event and marketing pros who use it to share ideas and make connections. A visit to the Apple App store also informed us it’s in an invite-only phase of development currently, so you’ve got to know someone to start using it. (We can help you out with that, if you’re curious!)

So, how are event pros using it? Here are four different ways to engage now:

  1. LEARN & CONNECT: Once you’ve set up a profile, you can join “clubs” based on your interests and tune into conversations led by experts in various fields. Think of it like a virtual conference with hundreds of breakout rooms featuring knowledgeable speakers. Find the topics that interest you, pop into the “room,” listen in on the discussions, and raise your hand virtually if you’ve got something to contribute or questions to ask. We also like that you can leave a session without being scolded or offending anyone. Another interesting feature is that no content is recorded or saved. It’s like an exclusive, real-time conference—if you don’t go, you won’t know.

  2. START A CLUB: For event pros ready to build a community and share content, you can take it a step further and start a Club. You’ll have to show a track record of hosting at least three “rooms” and apply as a founder. Once you’re approved, you choose your subject matter, invite speakers, moderate a session, and allow the audience to participate all in an audio-only, real time environment. (We think this is a particularly great way for camera shy, public speaking-averse thought leaders to build a presence and community.)

  3. FIND SPEAKERS: Clubhouse is a fantastic platform to scout for talented keynote speakers and expert panelists to feature at your own events. You can search by topic or popularity and “audition” folks without them ever knowing it.

  4. PROMOTE YOUR EVENT: Leverage the Clubhouse community to promote your own virtual or IRL event and drive attendance. You can host a room to give a preview of your programming or moderate a discussion about a related topic, and generate authentic interest among new audiences.

The jury is still out for us if we’re going to work this into our content consumption routine. But our curiosity has certainly been piqued.
